Canoe checklist
When planning a canoe trip, assume that it can rain, and things can get wet!
-2 sets of clothing per person…YOU ONLY NEED 3 NYLON BATHING SUITS OR SHORTS, 3 T SHIRTS*, 1 FLEECE JACKET, 1 WARM HAT(EVEN IN SUMMER) 1 SET LONG JONS (POLYPROPOLENE)
SUN PROTECTION-baseball hat or FAR BETTER>> missionary hat (helps in sun, rain & with bugs)-AND SUNSCREEN
-shoes you don’t mind wearing wet (Teva type sandals or old sneakers work best).. another set for camp. we will be PORTAGING SO BRING LIGHT BOOTS OR SNEAKERS
-wool socks l (if it rains.. they keep you warm in the boat OR IN CAMP)
-NEOPRENE SOCKS-NOT REQUIRED BUT NICE WHILE ON THE RIVER FOR WARMTH, LEACHES AND COMFORT
RAIN GEAR--rain jacket AND RAIN PANTS –REQUIRED FOR THE ADIRONDACKS…CAMPMOR SELLS A CHEAP RUBBERIZED SUIT FOR UNDER 25
-flash light OR HEADLAMP w/ 2 SETS extra batteries
-bug repellent and mosquito headnet ( you will look very silly but, they come in handy sometimes in camp if it is very buggy)
THIS WILL BE A BUGGY YEAR…ALSO BRING A NYLON PAIR PANTS AND A LOOSE FITTING WINDBREAKER FOR IN CAMP(ALSO FOR BUGS)
-sleeping bag w/ either an airmattress or foam pad( not essential but far more pleasant for grownups)
-tent- NOT REQUIRED… LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED TROOP TENTS
BACKPACK-YOU NEED TO CARRY YOUR GEAR FOR 1.5 MILES ON THE PORTAGE (EVERYTHING SHOULD FIT IN ONE PACK)
YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN-cup, bowl, spoon (1 per person) plastic Tupperware or cool whip containers work great. THIS MINIMIZES GARBAGE AS WELL
-food-WE SUPPLY DINNER/BREAKFAST AND PEANUT BUTTER JELLY FOR LUNCH FOR THE TRIP…IF YOU WANT MORE BRING IT…BUT WE ARE IN BEAR COUNTRY…WHATEVER YOU BRING MUST BE HUNG IN TREES SO PACK BLACK PARACHUTE CORD AS WELL
CHAIRS? THIS TRIP IS A PORTAGING TRIP SO…NO BIG CAMPING CHAIRS…SO DON’T BRING A CHAIR OR BRING ONLY TRIPOD CHAIRS($6-8) AND/OR FOLD UP FOAM CHAIRS FOR ON THE GROUND (THEY COST $22 FOR SLUMBERJACK TO $ 35 FOR CRAZY CREEK )GO TO CAMPMOR SLEEPING BAG DEPT FOR MORE INFO
How to Pack….
PLACE 2 large garbage bag within YOUR backpack. The key is to put the garbage bag IN (not over) the PACK. This way it can’t be punctured( and everything made soggy by the end of the day). This also applies to sleeping bags. All trip gear needs to be tied into the boats so bring rope or bungy cords along.
If you want to bring DRY BAGS FOR YOUR SLEEPING BAGS AND LIGHT BULKY GEAR…FINE
AT THE PORTAGE…ALL YOUR GEAR NEEDS TO BE CARRIED…INCLUDING PADDLES,LIFE JACKETS, FISHING GEAR ETC…THUS THE MORE YOU BRING…THE MORE TRIPS (3 MILES ROUND TRIP OVER A MOUNTAIN TRAIL) YOU MAKE!
*PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANYTHING COTTON…THE WEATHER WE ARE LIVING THRU RIGHT NOW IS TYPICAL ADIRONDACKS SUMMER WEATHER…INVEST IN 2 COOL MAX TYPE T SHIRTS…OR WEAR POLYESTER T SHIRTS OR…WORST CASE…TROOP CLASS B (50% COTTON/50% POLY) IT WILL NOT DRY VERY FAST…COOL MAX DRYS VERY FAST….
SUMMER WEATHER CAN GO OVERNIGHT FROM 85 TO 50 AND RAINING (FEELS LIKE 45) BE PREPARED!!!!!
FORDURING THE DAY ON THE RIVER
ALWAYS HAVE…
Rain gear,fleece,windbreaker, SNACKS, 2 qt water, baseball hat, sneakers/sandles, wool socks, shorts, long jons (not cotton), Role Duct tape, bungie cord or rope.
ALL GEAR SHOULD BE IN 2 GARBAGE BAGS WITHIN a day pack
